(Sept. 27, 2003) The music world is sadden by the death of musician Louis Satterfield.

Louis Satterfield was born on April 3, 1937, in Shaw, Mississippi. He later relocated to Chicago, Illinois, where he began his great music career.
The 1960s found him to be a much-in-demand sessions bass player for Chess Records in Chicago, as well as an intregal part of the Chicago-based band known as "The Pharoahs".

Years later, Louis Satterfield was heralded as a great trombone player, as part of Earth, Wind & Fire's notorious "Phenix Horns". Verdine White would later credit Louis Satterfield for being his mentor, which helped to spawn one of the best bass players of all time.
The world has lost a legendary musician, who will truly be missed.

According to Billboard magazine's Gail Mitchell, the disc includes Earth, Wind & Fire trademarks — love songs, Philip Bailey's distinctive soaring falsetto and harmonizing horns — but also a contemporary veneer.

(JUNE 25, 2002) BET AWARDS 2ND ANNUAL SHOW

*A press conference for the second annual BET Awards, was held yesterday at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood.  Still high and giddy off last years excellent 4.6 rating, BET execs are taking no chances and bringing back hosts Steve Harvey and Cedric The Entertainer. Obviously a smart move.  At the press conference, the two, who click as though they were a full-time team, were funny and deft as usual. They even did an impromptu version of Earth Wind & Fire's "Love's Holiday."
Moments later EWF's founder, Maurice White, gave his stamp of approval to the little ditty.  Speaking of EWF, the serpentine group, now down to only 4 original members, will be awarded the lifetime achievement award. They are scheduled to perform as well. The question is will Maurice White be on stage with them? The other special
award, the humanitarian award will go to Muhammad Ali.  As usual, there will be awards in the various musical, sports and acting categories. For a complete list, go to BET.com. It was also revealed by BET's Michael Lewellen that the show will most likely originate from the Kodak, home of the Academy Awards, for the next 2-3 years.  Also on hand to help with the announcements were JaRule,
Bow Wow, Ashanti & actor Morris Chestnut.
The BET Awards will air live on June 25 at 9 PM ET/PT.

**Thanks for the Heads Up James

(JUNE 17, 2002) EARTH, WIND & FIRE TO RECEIVE ASCAP RHYTHM & SOUL HERITAGE AWARD

The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) will present the ASCAP Rhythm & Soul Heritage Award to Earth, Wind & Fire, the seminal genre-crossing R&B/pop band, it was announced by Marilyn Bergman, ASCAP President and Chairman of the Board. This prestigious award will be presented at the 15th Annual ASCAP Rhythm & Soul Music Awards Dinner, which will take place on Monday, June 17, 2002 in Los Angeles, California at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

Earth, Wind & Fire were in the vanguard of artists that took R&B and popular music in new directions. Drummer Maurice White, a veteran of the Ramsey Lewis Trio and countless recording sessions at Chess Records, created the group in 1969 with the idea of bridging R&B, jazz, gospel, funk, pop and traditional African music. EW&F has recorded numerous signature songs that have been successful on both the Pop and R&B charts, including “Shining Star,” “September,” “Fantasy,” “Getaway,” “Sing A Song,” “That’s the Way of the World,” “Reasons” and “Serpentine Fire.” The group has recorded over 20 albums and has sold over 30 million albums worldwide. EW&F honors include six Grammy Awards, four American Music Awards, an NAACP Hall of Fame Image Award and induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The Earth, Wind & Fire fan base extends far beyond the Pop and R&B audience; their music crosses genre, ethnic and geographic boundaries and is embraced internationally.

Commenting on the award, Marilyn Bergman said, “The music of Earth, Wind & Fire is memorable, joyous and endlessly inventive. Their songs evoke romance, spirituality and freedom. Maurice White, Philip Bailey, Verdine White and company have created a lasting body of work that transcends category.” Previous recipients of the ASCAP Rhythm & Soul Heritage Award have been Chaka Khan and Peabo Bryson. A previously unreleased collection of live recordings by Earth, Wind & Fire, That’s The Way Of The World: Alive in ’75, has just been released by Sony Legacy.

Established in 1914, ASCAP is the world’s largest performing rights organization with over 135,000 composer, lyricist and music publisher members. ASCAP is committed to protecting the rights of its members by licensing and collecting royalties for the public performance of their copyrighted works, and then distributing these fees to the Society’s members based on performances. ASCAP’s repertory spans the entire spectrum of music – from pop to symphonic, rock to gospel, Latin to country, to jazz, rhythm and blues, theater, film and television music. ASCAP’s Board of Directors is made up solely of writers and publishers elected by the membership.

(Jun. 19, 2002) *For 27 years, Earth, Wind and Fire have proved themselves to be a band of epic proportions. The band received a Heritage award Monday by the ASCAP Rhythm & Soul Foundation. The show was held at Los Angeles' Beverly Hilton hotel.

One of the presenters, producer Jimmy Jam, recalled being turned onto Earth, Wind & Fire after hearing its 1972 Columbia Records' debut, "Last Days and Time," as a 13-year-old in Minnesota. Quincy Jones sent in a video message declaring himself to be the "biggest fan of Earth, Wind & Fire since day one."

Stevie Wonder presented the glass trophies to the group's eight members.

Earth, Wind & Fire will receive another accolade June 25 at the second annual BET Awards, being held at Hollywood's Kodak Theatre.

Band Celebrates 30th Anniversary with Major U.S. Concert Tour, Launch a Health Care Initiative and Release a Documentary

(Aug. 6, 2001) September has always been Earth, Wind & Fire’s month and this year is no different. The mighty, mighty R&B funk outfit is set to celebrate its 30th anniversary by embarking on a major concert tour of the United States. Viagra (sildenafil citrate), made by Pfizer, will sponsor "The Cool Blue September Tour," a relationship that was spawned to launch a health care initiative primarily geared towards men.

Six-times Grammy winners and members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Earth, Wind & Fire has sold over 30 million albums worldwide while delivering their own innovative mélange of progressive jazz, funky R&B, inspiring gospel and shimmering pop gems.

Deservedly earning the respect and adoration of fans, musicians and critics alike, EWF has garnered the reputation as being one of the finest live acts on the concert stage. Thirteen members strong along with a trio of dancers will tear through the band’s catalogue of hits including "Shining Star," September," "Fantasy," "Let’s Groove," "Reasons," "Got To Get You Into My Life" and "That’s The Way Of The World."

Together Earth, Wind & Fire and Pfizer are taking an innovative approach to reaching adults with a message about good health and see the relationship as a wonderful opportunity to bring healthcare to the people.

Pfizer, in partnership with the American Academy of Family Physicians Foundation and its affiliated chapters, will provide free health checks at Earth, Wind & Fire concerts along the tour route, as well as additional health checks open to the public in several concert markets.

The health checks aim to help identify signs of common conditions such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease that often go undiagnosed. The goal of the initiative is to encourage men and women to take a more active interest in their physical and mental health so they can enjoy life to the fullest.

Part of the tour merchandise proceeds will be donated to the AAFP Foundation, which has a mission to improve the health of all people and to support scientific, educational and charitable initiatives within the specialty of family practice.

"There’s no way that we’d be able to do what we do on stage night after night for thirty years if we didn’t take good care of ourselves," stated the band’s co-leader Philip Bailey.

"Verdine (White), Ralph (Johnson) and I all turned 50 this year, so maintaining our health is of primary concern. But not enough people out there, especially men, see their doctors for regular checkups. Basically our message to our fans is to please take care of themselves."

Also to mark the 30th anniversary, Eagle Vision will release "Earth, Wind & Fire: Shining Stars," a career retrospective documentary film that will be in stores August 21 in DVD and home video cassette formats.

Negotiations are underway for a television broadcast of the biographical film directed by Kathryn Arnold and Stephanie Bennett and produced by Bennett.

Leading industry trade Billboard magazine saluted the group’s anniversary in the July 14th issue with a special tribute section.

MAURICE WHITE SURPRISES EARTH, WIND & FIRE BY MAKING A SPECIAL APPEARANCE ON STAGE

(Oct. 4, 2001) *It happened. Earth, Wind & Fire visionary and leader Maurice White surprised the band and crowd last night by joining the Grammy award-winning troop on stage at Universal Amphitheatre to perform their classic "Keep Your Head To The Sky." White retired from concert appearances (reportedly for health reasons) with the band in 1994.

Before White walked out on stage to a thunderous standing ovation, lead singer Philip Bailey dedicated the inspirational anthem to Americans everywhere, especially those personally touched by the Sept. 11 terror.
