Through the years Al performed with Ike & Tina Turner, Sammy Davis, Jr., Isaac Hayes, Paulinho DaCosta, Patrice Rushen, Temptations, Larry Dunn, Bobby Lyle, Deniece Williams, The Emotions, and was musical director for the Sylvers. For great seven years, Al served as rhythm guitarist for the legendary group known, as Earth, Wind & Fire. During that time, he garnered numerous awards (Grammy, American Music, and etc.) for his work. He co-wrote some of Earth, Wind & Fire's most memorable hits (Singasong, Saturday Night, Smile, and September, with Maurice White. Al also co-wrote (with Maurice) the Emotions hit single, "The Best of My Love", which earned a Grammy, and produced American Recording Company's artist Ren Woods.
In 1983, Al left Earth, Wind & Fire to rear his young son and spend some down time from the road. He loves to spend his leisure time traveling and has visited Hawaii, Mexico, and Europe.
When he returned on the music scene and resumed his guitar artistry, he founded the jazz ensemble called, "Al McKay L.A. All-Stars", a Los Angeles based band comprised of several former Earth, Wind and Fire members (Andrew Woolfolk, Freddie White, and Johnny Graham). The group has toured Europe extensively.
In 2001, Al McKay released his long awaited solo project entitled, "Al Dente". The CD includes several songs, from Al's days with Earth, Wind & Fire.
